Weaning continued...


Obviously we are well into weaning at the moment, In fact I'm not sure if I could even call it weaning now. Olive is 9 months and she eats more than all of us! Shes past the awkward stages, we know what she likes (everything) we know how big or small things should be cut or cooked etc She has without a doubt taken to food like an absolute pro, I'm often asked questions about early stages In weaning, or what equipment we use so I'm going to link 2 previous blog posts HERE & HERE for anyone in earlier stages as I know weaning especially Baby Led can be a little daunting.

One thing Ive learned though with 2 little ones whom have both had very different weaning journeys is that you do what is best for you, we didn't throw ourselves into BLW straight away as I didn't feel Olive was ready or could cope with whole food yet. I received a message shortly after a previous blog post stating and I quote 'You are NOT baby led weaning and you can not class yourself as doing so' when I asked 'Why?' I was told that having given Olive puree at one point or another, even if now she wasn't eating puree I couldn't class our journey as being a 'Baby led' one. Well to that I say... WHATEVER! Just do you mamas, just do you!

We are at a nice stage now, Olive enjoys eating pretty much whatever we eat now (within reason) I feel its so much easier when out with her, I can pack a lunchbox of sandwiches, fruit, rice cakes, biscuits etc for ease or with some planning I can make almost anything suitable for a lunchbox. I shared so many recipes on my previous blog posts, which we still use and as time goes on we have tried some new ones too. I love using Pinterest for recipe ideas, keeping my eye out for cool weaning pages on Instagram or just messing around with recipes myself. I have to cook so often with being on slimming world, Ive found that I can just adapt a recipe I love to make it more interesting for the kids.

Breakfast time is by far my favourite meal of the day, I would say its the kids too. I get most experimental in the morning, I know that's not always possible so that's why I'm sharing 2 really easy recipes. One of which can be grabbed from the freezer and another that needs only 2-3 ingredients.

Frozen fruity Bark

This is perfect for teething babies too, granted its getting colder now but Its not stopping Olive from enjoying/getting in a mess with it.
  • Natural yoghurt (any flavour, any kind)
  • Fruit (Whatever your preference) We use berries.
  • Jam/Chocolate spread/Peanut butter (Again this is down to preference)

Use a large lunchbox or baking tin, basically anything that will fit in your freezer. I made the mistake of not checking the first time and ended up making a huge fuss. Pour the yoghurt in so its only a couple of centimeters thick. Scatter fruit then swirl in any other ingredients. Leave in the freezer for 4-5 hours or longer. Break the bark up in to little hand size, I used freezer bags to make portions up which was super handy to making sure we got as much as possible out of it. 

Banana & Oat Pancakes

  • One banana
  • One egg
  • Handful of oats (optional) for texture

Mash the banana and add one mixed egg. Add a handful of oats if you wish, nice for adding texture. Mix again. Heat up a small frying pan with a little oil, pan needs to be hot, cook pancake on each side for a few minutes. Serve with fruit and yoghurt.

Next up is a new favourite, Scones. We have been making savoury flapjacks for some time now and she loves them. So I did a little googling and here is what we did...

Savoury Scones

  • 1 egg
  • 80ml Milk
  • 35g melted Butter
  • 75g grated cheese (any cheese)
  • 35g spinach, chopped
  • 35g fresh tomato chopped finely
  • 120g self raising flour
  • 1/2 vegetable stock cube

(Can add other ingredients too, different cheese & veg for different flavour)

Preheat oven to around 180 as you prepare the ingredients and mix. We use a silicon mould for things like muffins, scones etc as they are so easy to just pop out. I spray with a little oil and use some kitchen roll to smear it all around. Whisk the egg, then to that add the melted butter and the milk, gently stir. You can then add the cheese and all the other veg ingredients that your using. When mixed evenly you can add the flour and crumble around half of a vegetable stock cube. When mix is combined separate into the mold, this mix will make around 6 scones. You could double up the ingredients to make more, we go with 6 so there is no waste. Oven for around 25 minutes.

As you can see Olive loves her food, we cant always cook fresh as sometimes life just gets in the way, I'm still prone to throwing the odd cheese spread sarnie in the mix with a packet of quavers. She loves, rice cakes especially the yoghurt covered ones and she can eat a whole banana in around 30 seconds flat. She makes Baby led weaning so fun, messy but fun.
